A Welcome Reunion by Lucinda Berry - Book Review
Lucinda Berry is known for writing emotionally intense stories that explore family trauma, mental health, and difficult relationships, and A Welcome Reunion is no exception. Although it’s a short story, it packs an emotional punch while leaving readers with plenty to think about.

The story follows Janie, who returns home for what should have been a joyful family reunion. Instead, old wounds begin resurfacing as she reconnects with the people she left behind. Through flashbacks and present-day conversations, the story slowly reveals a complicated family history involving grief, childhood trauma, and the lasting effects of painful decisions.
As Janie spends time with her family, it’s clear that beneath the surface of the reunion lies years of unresolved pain. Characters like Hannah, Christopher, Cole, and other family members each carry emotional baggage that influences the tense atmosphere. Janie reflects on her difficult childhood, fractured relationships, and memories that she has tried to leave behind.
The story gradually uncovers why returning home is so emotionally overwhelming for Janie. Rather than focusing on shocking twists, the narrative explores how trauma quietly shapes people long after the original events have passed. The ending doesn’t provide a perfect resolution but instead offers a realistic, bittersweet look at forgiveness, healing, and accepting that some scars never completely disappear.
Since it’s a short story, I wished the characters had been explored in greater depth. Some relationships and emotional moments felt rushed, making it difficult to fully connect with everyone. I also expected a stronger emotional payoff by the end.
