Giving In by Lola King - Book Review

Lola King’s Giving In is one of those books that throws you into chaos from the very first chapter. It’s not a light romance, nor is it a comfort read. Instead, it’s an intense, emotionally messy, morally grey story that combines bullying, romance, mystery, family secrets, and unexpected twists into one addictive read. It’s also the first book in the Stoneview Stories series, and it ends on a major cliffhanger, so be prepared to continue the series.

The story follows Jamie, a quiet, intelligent girl whose biggest flaw is her curiosity. When her nosiness leads her to uncover part of Jake White’s hidden past, she unintentionally attracts the attention of Stoneview Prep’s golden boy. Jake appears charming and untouchable on the outside, but beneath that perfect image lies someone carrying deep trauma, anger, and dangerous secrets. What begins as psychological bullying slowly turns into an obsessive attraction that neither of them can explain.

What makes the book stand out isn’t just the romance but the constant feeling that something much darker is happening beneath the surface. Jake’s behaviour often swings between cruel and protective, making it difficult to understand his true intentions. Jamie, despite being intelligent, repeatedly finds herself pulled into situations she knows she should avoid, creating a relationship that’s as frustrating as it is addictive.

One of the biggest surprises is discovering that Jamie’s boyfriend, Nathan, is actually Jake’s older brother. That revelation complicates every interaction and creates a tense love triangle that drives much of the emotional conflict. The deeper Jamie gets involved with the White family, the more hidden truths begin to emerge, and the story shifts from a bully romance into something much larger involving long-buried family secrets and trauma.

Without revealing the ending, the final chapters completely change the direction of the story. Just when you think you’ve understood the characters and their motivations, Lola King delivers a shocking cliffhanger that leaves more questions than answers and makes picking up the sequel almost unavoidable.

What I loved most was how unpredictable the plot felt. Every time I thought I knew where the story was heading, another twist proved me wrong. Jake is the definition of a morally grey character - easy to hate, impossible to ignore. Jamie isn’t a perfect heroine either, and that imperfection makes her feel more realistic. Their chemistry is intense, messy, and often uncomfortable, which perfectly suits the dark tone of the novel.

That said, this book definitely isn’t for everyone. The romance is toxic by design, and the story contains bullying, violence, emotional manipulation, and other dark themes. If you enjoy healthy romances, this probably won’t be the right choice. But if you love emotionally intense dark romances with flawed characters, psychological tension, and shocking twists, Giving In is an unforgettable experience.
